Trick of the Light

The quiet that exists in European towns the day after Christmas is both eerie and peaceful, alternating between them both in ways that made us feel as if everyone had disappeared from the planet, and then grateful to be experiencing the town as the solitary travelers.

In the somewhat grim, darkened streets, the cold and damp was even more penetratingly chill and then, suddenly, a beam of light slipped out from under the cloud bank and struck home, and then was gone in barely the blink of an eye.

      Mark,
It was great getting to know you and to feel your constant support and enthusiasm. I will be in London next month for a talk and an opening at a gallery called Beetles and Huxley around the 25th of January. All my best for the new year.

        Hi Joel

I’ve really enjoyed the project and will miss the inbox message and insight I’ve gained.

I shall have a look online and if the opening is open to all come and see you talk.

I wish you and Maggie all the best for 2016.

        Kindest regards

        Mark

Such a beautiful touch of light!

My kids bought me your newly released Cape Light book for Christmas. I checked that book out so many times from the public library when I was younger and developing and interest in photography. At the time, I had no idea who you were, but the images really captivated me. You have a way of capturing atmosphere and mood with sharp and detailed images that are soft at the same time. I really enjoyed reading the interview between you and Bruce MacDonald. The conversation about subject matter was quite interesting. Have a Happy New Year Joel and Maggie!

David, Thanks. I’m glad you have your own copy now and can revisit it when you wish. It’s part of the joy of photography, this revisiting of images and watching how they change over time. It’s something I have done a lot with not only my work but with the history of the medium.
All the best for the new year.
